This sacred kshetra (holy place) has been sanctified by the divine presence of Goddess Kaushiki–Kali–Kateramma, the fierce and powerful manifestation of Goddess Parvati.
According to the Puranas, in order to destroy evil forces, the Mother Goddess incarnated as Kaushiki, later assuming the form of Kali and revealing her intense divine fury. That very powerful energy is believed to have settled in this place, and over time came to be worshipped as Goddess Kateramma.
Around three hundred years ago, this entire region was covered with dense forest, filled with trees such as jalli, banyan, and bodri. Elders narrate that during those times, one could hear the sound of the Goddess’s anklets as she moved through the area, and the fragrance of jasmine would spread throughout the surroundings. Gradually, as human settlement developed, this place evolved into a recognized spiritual kshetra.
In this temple, the installation (pratishta) and worship were carried out according to the will of the Goddess through a family that has been performing the rituals for generations. The pooja began in a very simple manner as per the Goddess’s command, and devotees experienced only blessings and positive results. With time, the temple continued to grow and flourish. Today, it stands as a major Shakti Peetha, offering refuge, protection, and peace to countless devotees.
A special feature of this kshetra is that Pratyangira worship, Navadurga pratishta, and specific mantra sadhana are performed here for each type of problem faced by devotees. It is believed that by worshipping the Nine forms of Durga continuously for nine weeks, devotees receive complete and divine results.
On every Amavasya (new moon day), special homas and havans are conducted. Religious rituals such as Gupta Navaratri pooja during Ashadha month, Shata Chandika Yaga, Varahi Mahayaga, Shiva–Parvati Kalyanotsava, Girija Kalyanotsava, and other sacred ceremonies are performed strictly according to Agama Shastra traditions.
The animal sacrifice that was once practiced earlier has now been completely stopped. Today, only purely satvik (non-violent) and Vedic rituals are performed in this temple. In the northeast corner of the temple, Shakti Ganapati has been installed, giving importance to spiritual balance, harmony, and peace.
At present, this kshetra is well known for providing solutions to sorrow, enemy troubles, mental distress, and spiritual issues. It is the firm belief of devotees that anyone who visits this temple with devotion and faith will receive the Goddess’s grace in the form of peace, protection, and prosperity.
