Kateramma Devi is considered a fierce and powerful form of Goddess Parvati. According to the Puranas, when the atrocities of evil demons increased in the world, Goddess Parvati assumed the Kaushiki form with the purpose of destroying them, and later incarnated as Goddess Kali. After Kali defeated and destroyed the demons, her extreme ferocity, cruelty, and terrifying nature remained in the form of an energy presence. This remaining fierce form is known as “Kateramma.”
Although Lord Shiva, through his calm and compassionate nature, balanced and pacified Kali’s intense rage, the Puranas describe that this fierce power within Parvati was never completely destroyed. It is believed that this intense energy continued to exist as a Shakti form—one that dwells in cremation grounds, consumes the bodies of evil demons, and is associated with powerful, fearsome spiritual energy.
Even today, the worship of Kateramma Devi is widespread in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu and forest regions. While some people describe forms such as Kateri, Jalakateri, Vayukateri, etc., through tantric and Vamachara paths, we worship Kateramma Devi purely with devotion and faith.
It is believed that by having the darshan and performing the pooja of Kateramma Devi, physical, mental, and unknown spiritual doshas (negative influences) are removed. The origin, greatness, and power of this Goddess are mentioned in detail in various scriptures and Puranas, including the Kambadi Purana. The divine lineage—from Kaushiki to Kali, and from Kali to Kateramma—further elevates the glory and significance of the Goddess.
Our intention is to present the power, greatness, and mythological background of Kateramma Devi to devotees in a simple and understandable way. We pray that peace, protection, and strength bless the lives of all those who worship the Goddess with devotion, faith, and belief.
